Making Golf Fun!

About 2 year(s) ago by Randy Watkins

The daily chatter about golf these days is how to make golf more fun.  There are countless ideas floating around and they run the gamut from, faster pace of play, faster greens, new equipment that makes the ball go farther, easier to understand rules, relaxed dress codes, shorter courses, etc.

I think it’s quite simple and it relates to how we score each person’s round against “par”.  For example: Every course has an established “par” (i.e. 72) that is set for the expert or professional player.  Shooting 72 would mean that the expert player had played an excellent round that day.  Fair enough for him or her.  But what about a golfer that plays just on weekends and like my dad once did.  He was, at his best a 12 handicap golfer.  He and I would play matches against each other and he would make me play from the championship tees with a 0 handicap, and he from the member tees with his 12 handicap.  He would get a “stroke” on the 12 most difficult holes and our matches were always tough!  In effect, he established his own “par” of 84 from the tees he always played from. When he would shoot 84 and I would shoot 72, he would say to everyone around that he shot “even” par that day just like I did.  It was fun and competitive and he never felt like a lesser player than I was.  I think Dad was a pretty smart guy and figured out how to make golf fun for him just as I did.
How about giving that a try and establish your “par” and see how much fun you have!
